Good Words for an Imposter Game

The best words for an imposter game share one property: they belong to more than one category at the same time. That is what lets a player give an honest-sounding clue that still misleads the table. Pick six words, then decide which list each word fits.

Good words

  • Volcano
  • Submarine
  • Chandelier
  • Lighthouse
  • Octopus
  • Blacksmith
  • It has several obvious categories - a volcano is a mountain, a hazard and a place at once, so the first clue can point three ways.
  • Players know it but have never had to describe it, so clues come out clumsy and that is where the accusations start.
  • It survives a one-word clue: "lava" narrows two words, "ash" narrows five.

Okay words

  • Fork
  • Sofa
  • Pencil
  • Sneakers
  • Bucket
  • Napkin
  • Instantly recognisable, so nobody stalls - good for a fast round with new players.
  • Weak for deception: everyone describes it the same way, so the imposter blends in by accident, not by skill.
  • Use these to warm up, then move to the hard lists.

Words to avoid

  • The Eiffel Tower
  • Smartphone
  • Democracy
  • Cheeseburger
  • iPhone 15
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Too specific to leave room for a clue - "Eiffel Tower" is guessed before the first turn ends.
  • Brand names give away the answer to anyone who owns the product.
  • Abstract concepts make every clue sound poetic, and nobody can be accused of anything.

Two Words for Imposter Game

Some groups play with two words per player instead of one. Every player gets a related pair, the imposter gets a different pair from the same family:

PlayerWord 1Word 2
Crew (all but one)BeachDesert
ImposterLakeRiver
CrewMountainHill
ImposterVolcanoCrater

The rule that makes it work: your clue has to fit both of your words. "Sand" is a clean clue for Beach and Desert, and it is also true enough for Lake to keep a bluff alive for one more turn. Because the constraint is tighter, a two-word round needs fewer players to get good - four is enough - and the imposter gets caught on a word that does not belong to the pair rather than on a shaky single clue.

How to Play the Imposter Word Game

  1. Pick a list from the categories above, and set the difficulty to how well the group knows each other.
  2. Pass one phone around. Each player taps to peek at their word, hides it, and passes on. Nobody else should see a word.
  3. Give one clue each, in order. One word only, no gestures, and you may not repeat a clue somebody already used.
  4. Go a second round of clues if you want a longer hunt - the first pass is usually too clean to read anyone.
  5. Discuss. Everybody says who they suspect and why. Talk over each other as much as you like; that is the game.
  6. Vote. Name one player. If it is the imposter, the crew wins.
  7. Or let the accused guess. Some groups allow one shot at the word before the reveal. Right guess means the imposter survives, and the whole vote was wasted.

Add Hints to Level the Table

A hint makes the round playable when somebody has never heard the word. Three ways, easiest first:

Hint styleWhat players seeBest for
Category only"a place"Groups with mixed ages - the imposter never looks lost.
First letters and length"starts with B, 6 letters"Players who know the word class but not the word.
Hint for the imposter onlyEveryone sees the category; the imposter sees nothingGroups that want one player to be able to bluff credibly.

The generator on this site supports hint mode: deal a round with hints hands every player the category and the first letter, and hands the imposter only the category.

Imposter Game Words: FAQ

What are good words for an imposter game?
Words that belong to more than one category at once and that players know but rarely have to describe - Volcano, Submarine, Lighthouse, Chandelier. Avoid anything so specific that one clue settles it.
What words should I avoid in an imposter game?
Brand names, full proper nouns like The Eiffel Tower, and pure abstractions like Democracy. Brands are known by some players and not others, proper nouns are guessed on the first clue, and abstractions make every clue equally vague.
What is the imposter word game?
A party game where every player except one receives the same secret word. Players take turns giving a one-word clue about theirs, then the group discusses and votes on who holds a different word - or, in the no-word version, who received no word at all.
How do you play the imposter word game?
Pick a word list, hand everyone the same word and give one player none of it. Going in order, each player says one clue word. After everyone has spoken, discuss who sounded off, then vote. The imposter wins by surviving the vote; the crew wins by naming them.
Can I add hints to an imposter game?
Yes. Give each player a category name plus the first letter and letter count, or hand the imposter only the category. That lets a weak player bluff convincingly while the crew still has to work for the word.
What is the two-word version of the imposter game?
Every player receives two related words, such as Beach and Desert. The imposter gets a different pair, like Lake and River. Players must give one clue that fits both of their words, which is a much tighter constraint than one word and produces far more convincing bluffs.
Do I need an app to play?
No. These lists run in a browser, and the generator on this site deals words by passing one phone around, so nobody has to install anything.
Is there a printable imposter game word list?
Yes. Use the Print List button at the top of this page - it prints the word lists without the navigation or the game controls, so you can bring a page of words to a table.
How many players can play with one word list?
Three to ten. At three to five players use one imposter, six to eight use two, and nine or ten use three, or the round ends in ties.
